The Bachelor of Arts in Economics & Mathematics is a STEM joint major that requires a minimum of 128 credits or 32 4-credit courses of which 9 are economics (in addition to EC 101 and EC 102 ) and 7 are mathematics courses (in addition to MA 123 and MA 124 ). Information on the College of Arts & Sciences requirements for the BA may be found in the Boston University Undergraduate Programs Bulletin . Some graduate courses are open to undergraduates with the proper prerequisites, the written consent of the instructor, and guidance from the undergraduate advisor. A maximum of four courses at the 200 level or higher (i.e., this does not include transfer courses to fulfill CAS EC 101 and/or CAS EC 102) may be transferred toward your Economics major from other schools after matriculation to Boston University.
Additional information that is helpful in planning your courses appears here:
4 Prerequisite courses:
9 Economics courses (with grades of C or higher):
7 Mathematics and Computer Science (with grades of C or higher):

NOTES: Students who are already a declared Economics & Mathematics major (prior to Fall 2023) may choose to follow the old rules that were in place when they declared the major OR chose to follow the new structure, but newly declared majors (starting at the Fall 2023 term) must follow this new structure.
In following the new structure, if you have:
– Already taken EC 201 , then you will be required to take EC 501, but while EC 501 will count toward general BU credit, it will not be counted as a substitute for one of the required five EC electives.
– Already taken EC 202 , then you will be required to take EC 502, but it will not be double-counted as one of the five required EC electives.
– Already taken EC 203 or EC 303, then you will have the choice of taking EC223 (but this may not be double-counted as an EC elective), OR you may choose to take the mathematics course MA 581 Probability AND you may double-count it as one of your required five EC electives, but you may NOT then also count it as one of the required MA electives.
– Already taken EC 204 or EC 304, then you will have the choice of taking EC 224 (but this may not be double-counted as an EC elective), OR you may choose to take the mathematics course MA 575 Linear Models AND you may double-count it as one of your required five EC electives, but you may NOT then also count it as one of the require MA electives.
This can be quite complicated, so please be sure to see your EC advisor to make sure that everything is being done correctly.
